The Art of Crafting Writing Spaces

Finding those quiet moments for self-care feels like a tender embrace for the soul. What we do with those moments can profoundly shape our well-being.  For me, I turn to therapeutic writing.  It is like an internal magical journey that allows me to understand my thoughts, nurture my creativity, and find inner peace.

Before beginning this journey, I look at the space where my thoughts will unfold.  I prepare my writing corner so it transforms into a sanctuary for mindful expression, a haven where tranquility blossoms.  Once my space is transformed, I am set up to write without pressure or judgment and focus on whatever gets my attention during the writing process.

I encourage you to follow the steps below to create your best space for therapeutic writing.

Step 1: Imagine Your Haven

Close your eyes and envision a space that whispers to your heart.  It could be your favourite spot on the couch or a chair by the window that drinks in the gentle sunlight.  Maybe it’s your desk with a supportive chair surrounded by books that take you to different worlds.  Or your bed with a cozy blanket and a cup of your favourite tea.  Now, imagine the colours and objects that resonate with your happiest memories or make you feel like you have taken a deep breath of fresh air.

This mental painting lays the foundation for creating a space that is uniquely yours.  It shows you what elements will help you relax to gain the best results from therapeutic writing.

Step 2: Elements of a Peaceful Writing Space

Now that you have envisioned that nurturing space, make it happen!  Go to that place and gather those objects that bring you warmth and comfort.  I like to write at my desk in my well-supported chair beside my big window.  I have one of my plants nearby, and my jar of global beach stones.  I have photos of my kids as babies to remind me that life is short, so get on with it!

As you’re crafting your therapeutic writing space, consider the following:

  1.  Comfort, Sweet Comfort.  Physical comfort is critical for unlocking mental ease.  Thoughts flow more easily when you are not distracted by physical discomfort.  Gather pillows, back support, and a writing surface that will provide you with optimum physical support.

  2.  Personal Touch.  Beloved objects in your space can bring you joy and perspective.  This can relax you and increase your optimism during your writing. Look around your space and bring those objects close by.

  3.  Colours for the Soul.  Colours can impact mood.  Often soft blues and greens are for tranquillity, and warm yellows and oranges are for creativity.  Think about the intention you have for your session. Maybe you want to relax or create. Or maybe you need to resolve a problem or decrease stress.  Wrap yourself in colours that you need.

  4. Distraction-Free Oasis.  Escaping outside noise allows you to dive deep into your thoughts.  Choose a quiet space for therapeutic writing and silence or turn off other electronic devices so you can be present with your thoughts and nothing else.

  5. Purposeful Organization.  Arrange your favourite writing tools within arm’s reach to limit unnecessary actions while writing.  Writing without disruption will elevate your flow of thoughts.

Benefits of A Thoughtfully Prepared Therapeutic Writing Space

You can now see the benefits of thoughtfully crafting your space for therapeutic writing.  When you take the time to do this, you will be creating:

  1.  A safe space for you to explore the depths of your thoughts without worrying about others’ opinions.

  2.  A powerful sense of control where you don’t have to think of anything but the pen and paper in front of you.

  3.  A gift of freedom to reveal your truths and gain clarity on what’s keeping you stuck. This is the heart of therapeutic writing.

In essence, designing your space for therapeutic writing is a profound investment in your self-care journey.  Through this process, you are crafting a sanctuary that mirrors the tranquility you seek - a space where your inner world unfolds with purpose.
